What individual peer support can look like

A peer connection begins by hearing what matters most to you. Together, you may discuss goals, identify strengths, work through practical barriers, and plan your next step.

Some conversations center on recovery, some on mental health challenges, and others on adjusting to life changes. The pace and focus should reflect your stated preferences and the scope of peer support.

Examples of peer support

  • Talking with someone whose lived experience helps them understand challenges.
  • Practicing conversations and building confidence for appointments or community connections.
  • Identifying recovery-supportive routines, meetings, and activities.
  • Building a practical list of next steps, support contacts, and resources.

Important boundaries

Peer support is not counseling, psychotherapy, medical advice, crisis response, or a substitute for professional services. Any eligibility, fees, coverage, and appointment options must be confirmed before services begin.

Need help right now? If there is an immediate emergency, call 911. For mental health, emotional distress, or suicide crisis in the U.S., call or text 988.
